About this course

You will need at least 4 GCSEs in the C-E range, preferably to include two at grade C or above or an appropriate Level 1 qualification such as a BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma or a NVQ 1.

This course gives you the opportunity to explore both the academic and practical sides of health and social care. It aims to provide a broad programme of study, which is directly related to the changing needs of employers in the health and care sector. This qualification is made up of six units, three core units and three specialist units.

The topics you will study include:

· Values and interpersonal skills
· Lifespan development and care needs
· Care practice foundations.

The three specialist units are selected by the College and may
include the following:

· Values and communications in care settings
· Physical care
· Service user support
· The caring environment
· Promoting activity.

As part of this course you may have the opportunity to attend a health or care placement.

You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications
alongside your main course. These will include Functional Skills and can also include more specialist awards that are relevant to the subject you are studying.

A three day residential to develop individual and team skills will take
place at the start of the course.

How will I be assessed?
This qualification is assessed via coursework, which includes projects, assignments, presentations and practical activities.

Progression
On successful completion you may:

Progress to a Level 3, BTEC National Diploma in Care, or another Level 3 course in a related subject area, such as BTEC National Diploma in Early Years.

Or

Start an exciting and rewarding career in the health and social care sector, for example as a trainee Youth Worker, Elderly Care or Health Care Assistant. There are endless career possibilities
available locally, nationally or even internationally.

Or

Progress to the Apprenticeship scheme which combines paid
employment with further study in your subject area - see page 26 for further details.

Achieving this course will give you the equivalent of 5 GCSEs
at grades A*-C.
