BTEC Introductory Certificate Public Services (Edexcel)
The BTEC Introductory diploma in Public Services is designed to:
  • Develop a range of employability skills and techniques, understanding, personal qualities and attitudes essential for success in working life.
  • Develop learners understanding of working in the Public Services through a combination of the knowledge and skills gained throughout the course
  • Provide studies directly relevant to the Public Services (uniformed and non-uniformed) and provide a stepping stone into employment in these sectors, where some previous experience is necessary to gain initial employment.
The course is made up of eight individual units (three core units; two personal skills units and three specialist units) and is the equivalent of four GCSEs.

What will I be doing?
The BTEC Introductory Certificate consists of 6 units (2 core and 4 specialist). The two core units cover an introduction to the uniformed and non uniformed public sector and personal effectiveness for working in the Public services. The specialist units will cover a wide range of different subjects including the practical application of ICT, an introduction to security procedures and equipment, command and control systems used by the Public Services at major incidents and exploring how the public services deal with the general public. Students will learn by completing a range of practical and written projects based on assignments which are themselves based on workplace situations, activities and demands. Students will also take part in hands-on learning covering health and fitness and team working skills, to give them an opportunity to learn the necessary skills they will need to pursue a career in the Public Services.

How will I be assessed?
All assessment, for this course, is undertaken internally via a series of assignments. Students need to pass all assignments to complete a unit and to pass all units to complete the course and gain the BTEC Introductory Diploma qualification. All students are encouraged to complete the merit and distinction grades.

Where can I go after completing the course?
Students achieving a Merit or Distinction grade will be able to progress onto level two courses such as the BTEC First Diploma.
