Brief Description of the Course:

(NB. All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification)

The Level 2 Diploma Horse Care provides practical knowledge and experience combined with academic studies. Stable management and riding skills will be developed within the College Equine Department and students will gain a comprehensive knowledge of horse care. It is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine a practical based training programme with sound theoretical knowledge. This course is ideally suited to students who wish to spend a year developing their knowledge and experience working with horses. This course is highly practical and learners applying for this course will be expected to be hardworking, keen to learn about horse care and willing to take a ‘hands on’ approach when working on the stable yard.

Myerscough has some of the best teaching and event facilities in the UK. Students completing this one year course will be well prepared for employment in the equine industry.

The course is designed to give you a broad understanding of horse care, with a view to progressing to one of our Level 3 Diploma courses, or to start work in the industry.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:

¨ a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language

¨ or equivalent qualifications

¨ EQL Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Horse Care

List of Units:

Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries: Within this unit, you will start to investigate the employment opportunities available to you within the equine industry. You will look at self-development and how to prepare yourself for employment whilst developing your practical skills.

Carry Out and Understand the Principles of Feeding and Watering Horses: In this unit you will develop your practical and theoretical knowledge of feeding and watering horses.

Understand the Principles of Horse Biology: In this unit you will cover a range of a horse’s body systems and develop an understanding of the structure and function of each system.

Undertake Routine Stable Duties: This unit covers the daily care activities for the stabled and grass kept horse which includes mucking out, grooming, health checks, feeding, watering and the wide range of general yard tasks

Undertake Horse Handling: In this unit you will learn to safely handle horses along with an understanding of the importance of restraining horses in a range of situations.

Fit and Maintain Horse Tack and Clothing: Within this unit you will apply an assortment of horse clothing and tack in addition to developing an understanding of the importance of maintaining the good condition of tack and equipment.

Specialist Modules – Grooming route

Undertake Horse Grooming, Trimming and Plaiting: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding and the practical skills of grooming, trimming and plaiting horses to industry standard.

Introduction to Lungeing Horses: In this unit, you will focus on lungeing, which is a way of working horses from the ground. You will develop your practical ability and knowledge of exercising horses using different methods.

The Grooming option will develop learners’ ability to lunge horses, clip, plait and prepare horses for shows. Students on this route will also develop their skills to work horses from the ground. This route is ideal for students who want to work as a groom when they complete their education. Students taking this route will have one riding lesson per week depending upon their riding ability.

Specialist Modules – Riding route

Introduction to Riding Horses on the Flat: This unit aims to equip learners with an understanding of the principles of riding horses on the flat.

The Riding option allows students to develop their riding ability and skills. Students on this route will have three riding lessons per week. Suitability for this unit will be assessed by a ride interview.

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments and practical work. There are no formal examinations on the Level 2 Diploma.

Industrial / Work Experience:

Work experience is an essential part of the course where learners on this course will be working in the College's own yard one day per week. Students will also have the opportunity to be involved in the running or observation of world class jumping, dressage and show events.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Employment opportunities in equine and its related industries are currently very good. Former students have become grooms, stable yard assistants, stud grooms and apprentices.

Progression:

Level 2 students can progress to level 3 programmes subject to published entry requirements and satisfactory performance at level 2.

Additional Qualifications:

· City & Guilds Level 1 Extended Award in Employability and Personal Development Certificate.

· Learn to Work training.

· Functional Skills Qualifications – subject to entry profile.

Special Requirements:

1 Compulsory Yard Duties:

Students work on the yard, looking after the College horses approximately one weekend in four, term time only.

2 Equipment and/or Clothing:

Plain navy blue or black jodhpurs, College sweatshirt/ polo shirt in navy/ black, or similar plain sweatshirt/ polo shirt. Navy or black jacket (warm and waterproof advised). Boots for yard work – wellingtons or strong boots, riding hat to current standard PAS015 or BSEN1384 plus gloves and hairnet. Riding boots or leather gaiters (suede chaps are not allowed as they rub the horses sides). Jumping whip and schooling whip, plus back protector is compulsory for jumping lessons. (Hooded jumpers, bright or garish clothing is not acceptable on the yards).

3 Enrichment Activities:

Students will be given the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities throughout the duration of the course. Most of these activities will be funded by the College, however at times the cost may be required to be covered by the student.

4. Extra Costs:

Resources and Facilities Contribution, approximately £95.00 (Subject to change).
