Course programme

Course overview
The course runs on a part time basis, i.e. one day per week over the college year, September to June. Year 1 runs on Monday and year 2 is set to run on Thursdays. The course is scheduled to cover 6 units in year 1 and 5 units in year 2. There are 5 mandatory units to complete over the 2 years:Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace – year 1Communications for Engineering Technicians – year 2Engineering project – year 2Mathematics for Engineering Technicians – year 1Mechanical principles and Applications – year 1There is a choice of optional units, however these will be selected according to progression* into year 2, the optional units are:Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials – year 1Engineering drawing for Technicians – year 1Mechanical Measurement and Inspection Techniques – year 1* Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians – year 2Applications of Computer Numerical Control in Engineering – year 2Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems and Devices – year 2* Further Mechanical Principles and Applications – year 2Engineering Primary Forming Processes – year 2Engineering Design – year 2A fixed timetable of study will be allocated in the first week as part of the course induction, this will show start and finish times of each lesson, units to study, the allocated room and the lecturing staff. Achievement of each unit is by successful completion of a range of assessment methods, these predominantly include written assignments and time constrained assignments. Some units will be studied online, for example CAD in the drawings unit and circuit development in the pneumatic and hydraulics unit, plus research tasks for other units. Some units will include experiments and tests as part of the assessments
Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at those wishing to become technically qualified as part of an Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship and those wishing to progress towards Higher Education. It’s the perfect course for you if you’re currently employed in the Engineering/Manufacturing sector and want to enhance your career prospects. An entry level of GCSE grade B is required in Maths and a Science subject and a minimum of grade C in English. If you’re a mature learners then your past engineering experiences and qualifications will of course be considered. An alternative way of entry onto this course is achieving a BTEC level 2 with an emphasis on Maths and Science grades being at a higher level.
