Bournemouth and Poole College are excited to launch their brand new Level 3 National Foundation Diploma and Extended Diploma in Production Arts Practice. (Full time 2 Year study programme).

This qualification has been designed to provide post 16 learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress into higher education, further training or employment in the industry.

All in our modern fully equipped 120 seat ‘Jellicoe Theatre’ under the tutelage of experienced industry professionals with a wealth of knowledge to share, and a passion for the performing arts.

You will be fully supported with both academic and personal development tutors and there will be a focus on relevant work experience preparing you for the world you will encounter as you progress

About this course

After the 2 year course, progression may be to university to study for a degree, specialist training at Drama school or to employment. The skills learnt on this course will help you in a variety of careers within television, film or theatre work, live music, leisure, corporate work or self-employment. Employment within the industry not only depends on talent but also on a sense of determination to succeed. You will be given advice on self-employment and potential routes.

We can provide full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the Technical Arts sector in areas such as Stage Management, Lighting & Sound Design and Operations, Set Design and Construction, Live Music Production, Musical & Contemporary Theatre Production, and working in Film & TV, and a wide variety of other opportunities. Alongside the Performing Arts and entertainment industry, the transferable skills you will develop will enable you to find work in various industries, i.e: IT, Project Management, Team Leading, Professional Development, Media, Events Management and Advertising.

You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C) including English and maths grades.

If you are not from an English Language speaking country, you will need to have UKVI IELTS 5.5. We accept a wide range of academic qualifications awarded overseas and use the UK NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre) guidelines for international comparisons.

Course programme

Course Content

This course offers a comprehensive introduction and exploration of Production Arts in the form of practical workshops and skills development. You will regularly have the opportunity to work on productions such as plays, student devised work or showcases. In addition, you will learn about the production process and see and analyse theatre work in the Jellicoe Theatre.

You will study a number of units over two years including:
  • Lighting Design and Operations
  • Sound Design and Operations
  • Technical Stage Operations
  • Audio and Visual Effects
  • Special Effects
  • Set Design, Construction, Prop Making.
  • And stage Management
During the course you will develop your ability to respond to drama performances to improve your understanding of social and cultural contexts of theatre arts, as well as developing your technical skills.

You will be fully supported with both academic and personal development tutors and there will be a focus on relevant work experience preparing you for the world you will encounter as you progress.

Alongside the vital industry related skills taught there will be the opportunity for you to identify specific areas of interest, and develop knowledge and skills through personal projects combining organisation skills, self-awareness and project planning with academic expertise, self-reflection and goal setting.

Leaving college with a substantial portfolio as an outcome of undertaking a number of significant projects.
