About this course
You will need at least 5 GCSEs in the A*-C range, including English Language and preferably Maths, or an appropriate Level 2 qualification such as a CACHE Certificate in Childcare and Education or a BTEC First Diploma.

This is a practical work-based course that combines both academic study and the development of practical skills and knowledge. This course is made up of seven core units, plus specialist units selected by the College.
The topics you will study include:
· Positive relationships for children†s care, learning and development
· Positive environments for children†s care, learning and development
· Promoting children†s development
· Reflecting on and developing practice for children aged 0-8
· Children†s learning activities and play.
The seven specialist units, selected by the College are chosen from a
wider list and could include:
· Diet and nutrition for children
· Psychological perspectives on behaviour
· Supporting children†s literacy skills
· The impact of social policy on children†s care, learning and
development.
You will need to complete a minimum of 800 hours competent practice in a range of early year†s settings including schools and nurseries.
A three-day residential to develop individual and team skills will take
place at the start of the course.
You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications alongside your main course. These may include qualifications in Functional Skills and can also include more specialist awards relevant to your subject.
How will I be assessed?
This qualification is assessed via coursework, which includes projects, assignments, presentations and practical activities.

On successful completion you may:
Progress to a university level qualification to train as an Early Years Teacher, Social Worker, Midwife or General Nurse (subject to you also having gained GCSEs in English Language, Maths and Science in the A-C range). Progression to other courses such as speech therapy is also possible.
Or
Start an exciting and rewarding career in the early year†s sector, for example as a Pre-school Leader, Nursery Nurse, Nanny or Nursery Supervisor.
Achieving this course will give you the equivalent of 3 A Levels and provides entry to study at degree level.
