Building Surveying focuses on all aspects of property and construction from supervising large mixed-use developments to planning domestic extensions; you could be involved with the conservation and restoration of historic buildings to contemporary new developments. As a Building Surveyor you will assess the quality of these buildings, examine their condition and advise on how to improve both their safety and sustainability.

About this course

Our course will help you gain an understanding of the technical aspects of construction, management and measurement skills bringing together all aspects of the building process, from concept through to completion. You will learn to understand design, technical and legislative elements and sustainability to achieve the best quality and value within the project’s specifications. You are likely to be involved in a range of services, from building pathology, land and building surveying to contract management.

You will be able to advance your professional skills through an optional industry placement between years two and three. This placement year can count as part of the required experience for Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors professional status.

Many of our students will work towards Chartered Membership (MRICS) status upon graduation, by gaining a further two years of practical training. While for others, the course provides a transition to postgraduate study.

Chartered Building Surveyors are involved in all aspects of property and construction from supervising large mixed-use developments to planning domestic extensions. Whichever sector they work in, building surveyors’ knowledge and understanding of construction technology and building pathology means they are ideally equipped to provide a wide range of services.

Typical entry requirements

Art and Design Foundation or
112 points from at least 2 A levels or
BTEC Extended Diploma DMM or
International Baccalaureate: 26+ Points
Plus five GCSEs grades 9-4 including English Language or Literature and Maths or Science at grade 4 or above.

Teaching and assessments

This course sits within the suite of Built Environment programmes at DMU. It aims to prepare students for employability and for Chartered membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, following two years of practical training and also for those wishing to progress to Masters courses.

Module assessment strategies have a wide range of methods including portfolio presentations, essays, reports, oral and graphical presentations and continuous assessment regimes, particularly in the studio-based aspects of modules.

Our integrated team of built environment professionals teach and research architecture, technology and sustainability. The academic team is committed to a rich range of teaching, learning and student support, and assessment methods to reflect the vocational nature of the course. The course draws on the wide range of research expertise in the Leicester School of Architecture, ranging from architectural design, technology and sustainability. You will also benefit from the input of practitioners and specialists and visiting guest lecturers.

Contact hours

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports). Your precise timetable will depend on the optional modules you choose to take, however, in your first year you will normally attend around 16 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and we expect you to undertake at least 23 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research.
