BSc Business is a highly flexible course designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of business management, while providing you with a range of practical skills to enable you to succeed in the workplace.

The first year introduces the key areas in the study of business. In the second year, you choose to either remain on the BSc Business or opt to specialise with a pathway in accounting, human resource management or marketing, while also developing core skills required for a career in business management.

Based in the Department of Management, this programmes takes an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, offering you an innovative way of learning about topics that cannot be pigeonholed into one particular area.

Birkbeck has a diverse student community, which creates a stimulating and supportive learning environment. You will interact with peers, many of whom will have come from directly relevant jobs, possessing a broad range of experience, to develop a more detailed and nuanced insight into business.

Our graduates begin new careers or accelerate along their current career path because what we teach in the evening can be applied almost instantly. For this reason, alumni from the Department of Management include chief executives, senior business leaders, notable academics and public figures.

This course is also available for full-time evening study over three years.

About this course

You will develop key skills such as:

analytical skills that will enable you to critically appraise and challenge existing managerial or business practices
an understanding of how decisions are made in organisations
quantitative skills that can be applied in the analysis of management and accounting problems
communication and interpersonal skills.

Graduates can pursue careers in business, management, accounting or human resources management. This degree may also be useful in becoming a human resources officer, management consultant, corporate investment banker or marketing executive.

Course programme

COURSE STRUCTURE

In the first year, all students take shared core and compulsory modules worth 90 credits.

You can then either complete the BSc Business or choose a pathway in accounting, human resource management or marketing.

You can take any option module offered by the Department of Management, subject to the Programme Director's approval.

BSC BUSINESS

In Year 2, you take five compulsory modules and an option module worth 15 credits.

In Year 3, you take two compulsory modules and option modules worth 60 credits.

In Year 4, take two compulsory modules, including a business project, and choose option modules worth 45 credits.

BSC BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTING

In Year 2, you take four compulsory modules and choose an option module worth 15 credits.

In Year 3, you take two compulsory modules and choose option modules worth 45 credits.

In Year 4, you take three compulsory modules, including a research project.

BSC BUSINESS AND HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

In Year 2, you take five compulsory modules and choose an option module worth 15 credits.

In Year 3, you take four compulsory modules and choose option modules worth 30 credits.
