Course programme

The years 2008-2010 (and counting!) will go down as one of the most testing periods in history for the relationship between Business and Finance. As Governments are spending unimaginable sums of money - to bail out banks, so that they can lend to businesses; and to bail out businesses, so that they can repay banks - this subject has become one of the hottest topics in the world. The Business Finance degree aims to develop a coherent framework to understand financial strategy, the conduct of banking and financial services, and government regulation of money and finance - and to equip you with the professional skills to work in this vital and increasingly complex field.

Here at Aberystwyth, you will study Business Finance in a Department, which:

  • combines traditional academic teaching with up-to-date training in the skills you will need for business;
  • has strong links with local businesses;
  • works with you as an individual to optimise your career opportunities;
  • supports and offers you the opportunity to take a year out to work in a business environment;
  • is in a University which, year after year, has one of the highest student satisfaction ratings in the UK country.

Business Finance Degree Year 1

No prior knowledge is assumed, so your first year syudying for your Business Finance degree lays the foundation for your future studies. The Finance aspects of the programme emphasise fundamental accounting and finance concepts, theories and practice, to promote well-informed financial decision-making. On the Business side the emphasis is on applying these concepts to "real-world" business activities and case-studies as well as and simulated environments and scenarios.

Core modules in Year 1 include:

  • Introduction to Management and Financial Management;
  • Business Environment;
  • Mathematics and Quantitative Methods for Accounting and Business Finance;
  • Introduction to Management Accounting.

Business Finance Degree Years 2+3

In Years 2+3, you will broaden and deepen your knowledge, so that you develop a powerful portfolio of professional skills in effective decision making, value-based prioritization, information clarification, needs assessment and influential presentation. You will also investigate in depth the topically problematic areas of the relationship between Business, Finance and the Economic cycle. As well as the traditional teaching based modules during your final year you will also have the chance for independent research in a related topic of your choice.

Core modules in Years 2+3 include:

  • Financial Markets and Institutions;
  • The Business Cycle and Macroeconomic Policy;
  • European and International Monetary Systems;
  • Corporate Finance.

As your competence and confidence grows through Years 2+3, so increasingly you can choose from a fantastic range of optional modules in the subjects which particularly interest you, or which you think will be increasingly relevant to your future career. Elective modules in Years 2+3 include subjects as diverse as The Role and Practice of Audit and Regional Economics
