  • The business course has been good for equipping me with some future skills which I hope will help secure me a decent job in the real world when I graduate next year. At time some of the course contebt has been a bit slow and could do with more inspiring guest speakers who have made it big in business.

What I would highlight: I am quite happy with my uni and I think I made the right choice for my field of study. The uni is quite local to me and I did not want to move away from home. I am hoping that I will be able to graduate with good job prospects.

Full description

The world is increasingly reliant on effective information systems – and that includes business. Our course explores the nature and value of information in a commercial context, including how it is gathered, stored and used. The focus is on analysing business problems and designing systems to solve them.

Learning theory in the classroom, you’ll also get plenty of practical experience as you put your skills to creative use. You’ll consider security and data management while getting an introduction to modelling and programming.

You’ll specify, design and build applications to meet business requirements, including small-scale database systems and web apps. And you can also choose to get on-the-job experience during a placement year.

Besides technical know-how, you’ll learn transferable skills which are essential in any sector. You’ll become a confident communicator, able to work well independently and in a team; develop creative, flexible approaches to problem solving; and the ability to put them into practice. You’ll learn to do this safely and ethically, aware of the political, social and cultural contexts in which you’re working.

Our computer architecture labs include an isolated network, so you experiment safely with the configuration of network devices. Meanwhile, our software applications labs offer Apple Mac Pros with dual-boot into Windows or Mac OS X. From there, you’ll have access to applications including CAD, databases and web software. We also have a virtual network environment, so you can access our networking devices whenever you like.
