This Business Information Technology course runs in 2016/17.

Today’s businesses are faced with the challenges of global competition and technological change. This course prepares you for meeting these challenges by teaching you fundamental elements of both business and IT.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

We passionately believe that learning is much more than studying theory and have designed our course to give you the practical knowledge and experience necessary for you to meet the demands of a career in industry or commerce.

The course is adaptive, responding to the demands of business to equip you with the required knowledge and skills to fulfil business needs.

• Accreditation by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional; partially meeting the Academic Requirement for registration as a Chartered Scientist; and, on behalf of the Engineering Council, partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer;

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

In the first year of the course you will cover the key themes of programming, business organisation – structure and strategy, information systems analysis and design, ICT and its role in business, business decision making and tools and techniques.

Through the second and final year you will apply these core themes to specific modules, such as real world projects where you will work as part of a development team to deliver a business IT solution. You will also have the chance to apply for a work placement or study abroad where you will put your theory to the test.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, tutorials and project based practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 20%; coursework, essays, project and group work 60%; practical exams e.g. presentations, tests, etc.20%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 15 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials, seminars (or, later, individual project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: 3 hours of practical classes, workshops, or laboratory sessions each week

Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures, demonstrations and guest speakers each week

Personal study: up to 25 hours each week of guided study in your own time.
