This degree is designed for those wishing to become IT practitioners in a business environment. It is a practical degree covering both technical and theoretical issues relating to the development, management and maintenance of information systems and applications. If you have the ability but not the qualifications, an extended degree is the first step to graduation. This four-year programme is identical to the three-year degree, but includes a foundation year, and has a lower entry tariff.Foundation yearThe foundation year is designed to give you:Essential and practical computing skills. Degree structureAs part of the degree you will gain experience of project management of IT development, appreciate security issues in IT, understand management and planning of IT within an organisation, and develop skills in software and database development. Course content includes understanding of business organisations, structures and business functions and how IT is used in such environments, learning how to design and build IT systems including database design and software development techniques, and understanding the legal and social impact of using IT.You will learn how to put personal and professional skills and ideas into practice, working both individually and in teams, in preparation for careers in industry and the commercial world.OutcomesThe aims of the programme are:To educate in the theory, technology, practice and application of computing and the development of information systems.     Assessment The assessment methods are defined in each module description. Each modele will be assessed by an appropriate combination of:
    Examination
    Coursework
    Presentations
    Peer assessment
    Logs and/or tests.

    Each course is assessed by either coursework only or a combination of coursework and examination. The final year project will be assessed as an individual piece of work.
    Teaching methodsTeaching and learning is achieved primarily through taught courses, based around material provided in lectures it is further enhanced by team work and role‐play. In addition, students will be encouraged to extend their knowledge by exploring other sources of information, self‐study, discussion of ethical dilemmas and directed research and reading. This will be supported by self‐study using other materials and the use of online resources, which students will be directed to. Students will be encouraged to use other information sources and documentation, such as online journals and eBooks available through the University's eLibrary. Students will be encouraged at all times to develop their critical faculties and exercise creative problem solving. The final year project gives the opportunity for students to further enhance these skills.
    Professional recognition This degree has accreditation from the British Computer Society , the chartered body responsible for establishing and maintaining technical and ethical standards in the computing profession. This means that on successful graduation from this degree, you will have fulfilled the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP). The programme also has accreditation from the European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education (EQANIE).
    Careers Graduates from this programme can pursue careers as business analysts, systems designers, database developers, database administrators and website developers.
