Course programme

Good managers are hard to find. To be a good manager, you must deal on a daily basis with a complex range of economic, financial, human and legal issues: issues which can have a profound impact on the lives of the people you manage and on the performance of the business you work in. You must be both a good team player and a good leader of the team; with the clarity of vision to set priorities, and the inter-personal skills needed both to delegate responsibility and to enable and support the work of your staff.

The Business & Management degree will enable you to develop a broad understanding of management in the business context. You will develop the skills to analyse management issues in relation to company priorities, staff needs and external factors, and be introduced to current perceptions of good management practice.

Here at Aberystwyth, you will study Business and Management in a Department, which:

  • makes world-leading contributions to research and practice;
  • combines traditional academic teaching with up-to-date training in the skills you will need for business;
  • works with you as an individual to optimise your career opportunities;
  • enables you to combine Business and Management with a fantastic range of other disciplines, from Computer Science to International Politics;
  • is part of a University which, year after year, has one of the highest student satisfaction ratings in the UK;
  • offers all students the opportunity to take a year out from their studies to work in business.

Business & Management Degree Year 1

No prior knowledge is assumed, so Year 1 of your Business & Management degree lays the grounding for your future studies, introducing you to the fundamental principles of Management and to an understanding of the business context in which they need to be applied, both in your studies and in your future career. You will also take a core module in Managing Finance - a topic which most first year students could usefully study, whatever their discipline!

Core modules in Year 1 include:

  • Introduction to Management;
  • Business Environment;
  • Marketing Principles;
  • Managing Finance.

Business & Management Degree Years 2+3

In years 2+3 you apply the principles which you have learned to a broader range of Management issues and scenarios and, amongst other things, begin to look in greater depth at how to manage people, how to do sound Management research, and how to manage innovation.

Core modules in years 2+3 include:

  • Human Resource Management;
  • Management Research and Innovation;
  • Organisational Behaviour;
  • Strategic Business Leadership.

Throughout years 2+3, as your competence and confidence increases, you also have greater opportunities to apply what you have learned to topics of your own choosing, in elective modules ranging from Accountancy to Small Business Management.
