Course programme

Overview

This replaces the existing NVQ course and is for adults either in paid employment working in schools or helping in a voluntary capacity in schools and who want to update their skills, learn more about the role and gain a recognised qualification as a teaching assistant.

There will be a range of different learning activities, including lectures, workshops, small group work and tutorials. The subjects taught on the course will include:

  • the role of the teaching assistant,
  • supporting children's learning,
  • effective communication,
  • current legislation,
  • managing behaviour,
  • safeguarding children.

Entry Requirements

All your learning will be related to practice so you must be working or volunteering in a school for approximately 10 hours a week.

Students should normally be aged 18 or over and have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills and sufficient general education to undertake a level 2 course, preferably GCSE maths and English or equivalent.

If you do not already have a full Disclosure and Barring Service check, you will be required to obtain one and the current fee for this is £44.
