The purpose of this qualification is to confirm your competence in a supervised role that supports pupils’ learning in a school environment. The qualification enables you to develop and demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to work in an entry level role within the school workforce, directly supporting the teaching and learning of pupils in all school settings.

Who is it for?

This qualification is ideal if you’re already working or volunteering in a learning support role in a school environment and want to develop your knowledge and skills or confirm occupational competency. There is a requirement for 4 hours assessment in a real work environment so you must have a placement (either as a volunteer or as a member of staff, for at least 100 hours) in a school environment and therefore you will need DBS certification.

Qualification content

The primary purpose of this qualification is to confirm your competence in a supporting teaching and learning role in a school environment. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge needed to provide effective support for Teachers and pupils, including:

  • understanding how to support the development of children and young people
  • maintaining and supporting relationships with children and young people
  • understanding how equality and diversity can be supported in work with children and young people
  • supporting children’s positive behaviour
  • supporting extra-curricular activities.

You’ll also develop a wide range of personal transferable skills, such as teamwork, communication and self-assessment skills, which will benefit you as you progress through your career.

The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools contains 12 units to help you gain skills and knowledge in the areas relevant to your job role.

What type of qualification is this?

This is a vocational QCF qualification with 180 guided learning hours (plus 3 – 5 hours per week home study). Within this time you can expect to be involved in formal learning activities which will include classes, tutorials or student presentations, self-evaluation, supervised practical work in the workplace and assessment where an Assessor is present. 100% of this qualification focuses on the development of skills and knowledge to support you to work in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.
