You will need to be aged 16 to 18 and have 28 GCSE points. Introduction:
This course covers the practical and theoretical aspects of child care work. 50% of your time will be on work placement looking after young children, the rest of the time will be spent studying a range of vocational skills.

Study Mode & Location:
This is a one year full-time course. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
The course comprises individual units which will be built into your college work and practical placement. You will learn how to care and educate children between the ages of 0-16 years. The units are organised into core units and optional units.

Core units:

  • Unit 1 An introduction to working with children
  • Unit 2 The developing child
  • Unit 3 Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children
  • Unit 4 Children and Play.
  • Unit 5 Communication and professional skills within childcare and education
Optional units:

  • Working with Children from birth to age 5 years


You will attend placement 2 days per week, working across the age ranges. Your time will be spent working with the 0-3:11 age range in nurseries and the 4-7:11 age range in schools. You will need to complete 65 days in placements and will have a Practice Evidence Record Book to work from.

Students will also have the opportunity to study three key skills in information technology, communication and application of number at an appropriate level.

Assessment:
To be successful on this course you will need to pass all units. Each unit is assessed individually through assignments and graded. During your time on placement you will need to achieve positive reports, demonstrating your practical skills. At the end of the course an independent assessment is made through a multi-choice question paper.

Work Out Your Point Score
You will need to let us know on your application form your predicted exam grades and your point score. To work out your point score, you must use the grades that you get for GCSE Maths and English Language, and then your next best 5 grades. At Preston College, the level of course you start on will depend upon your point score. Your grades are worth the following points:

GCSE Grades
  • A* = 8 points
  • A = 7 points
  • B = 6 points
  • C = 5 points
  • D = 4 points
  • E = 3 points
  • F = 2 points
  • G = 1 point


(GCSE short courses are worth half the score of a full GCSE. Applied GCSEs are equivalent to two single GCSEs, eg an Applied GCSE at Grade C is worth 10 GCSE points).

GNVQ Foundation Part 1 (Equivalent to two GCSEs)
  • Distinction = 8 points
  • Merit = 6 points
  • Pass = 4 points


GNVQ Intermediate Part 1 (Equivalent to two GCSEs)
  • Distinction = 14 points
  • Merit = 12 points
  • Pass = 10 points


Full GNVQ Intermediate (Equivalent to four GCSEs)
  • Distinction = 28 points
  • Merit = 24 points
  • Pass = 20 points


NVQs
NVQ Level 1 = 8 points. (NVQ Level 1 courses are equivalent to two GCSEs at Grade D and guarantee progression to NVQ Level 2 courses in the same subject area).

Certificates of Achievement
Up to 22 points will be awarded to students with Certificates of Achievement, for example AQA units, Compact 2000 and NPRA units. The Schools` Recruitment Team will inform you if you qualify.
