A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (preferably including English and/or maths); or a GNVQ Intermediate / First Diploma / National Certificate in a related subject; or equivalent qualifications. Who The Course is for
The Extended Diploma in Health, Social Care & Early Years is ideal for anyone who wishes to enter a health or social care related profession or progress to higher education in a health or social care related field e.g. nursing, social work, midwifery or paramedic.
Successful students tend to:

- understand the needs of others
- be caring and patient and able to stay calm under pressure.

Course Content
Students will study 4 compulsory units:
- Working to quality practice in care settings
- Working with service users in care settings
- Behavioural awareness in care
- Applied practical care in settings
PLUS a range of specialist units such as:
- Coping with stress in a care environment
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Child Development
- Developing skills to care for babies
- working with older service users
- Health Education
Key skills in communication and application of number will also be studied as an integral part of the course.
There will be a period of compulsory work experience within this qualification.

Entry RequirementsLearning & Assessment Methods
All 18 units will be assessed by internally set assignments. There are no examinations. Candidates must achieve a minimum of a pass grade in all of the units.

Successful students can progress onto a relevant Higher Education course.
If you successfully complete a level 3 course at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College we will offer you a place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at Newcastle College (subject to satisfactory interview or course audition).
Career Opportunities
An Extended Diploma in Health Social Care and Early Years - Level 3 is equivalent to three A Level passes at grades A to E. Students with an Extended Diploma in Health Social Care and Early Years - Level 3 have access to a wide range of career opportunities including further training in areas such as Paramedic, Social Work, Nursing, Midwifery and Education.
