Care of surgical patients begins in the pre-operative phase, and is continued into the perioperative and intraoperative phases through to recovery and post-operative care. This continuing journey is complex and involves many people and departments underpinned by interprofessional working and collaboration.

This module adopts a wide approach to this surgical journey and is suitable for anyone working with surgical patients or who may have an interest in surgery as a health and social care practitioner. In studying this module you will be encouraged to not only see your involvement in surgery and perioperative practice as application of a range of technical skills but also to place the person undergoing surgery at the centre of their focus, challenging existing techniques and practices.

About this course

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

Critically appraise your own role in relation to care of the surgical patient
Critically examine contemporary issues and challenges in surgical care
Synthesise theory and practice in relation to surgical care

Be able to provide evidence of previous study at Level 5 or above in a related subject area including but not limited to health and social care, social work, health promotion or youth work
Be a health care professional with access to an environment where you will be able to apply your skills to achieve the individual module learning outcomes. This does not specifically need to be employment and could include voluntary work

Offset module credits towards BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Top-Up)
If you are a registered nurse but do not have a degree qualification, once you’ve completed this module you could offset the 20 credits through recognised prior learning (RPL) towards our online BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Top-Up) degree. This would reduce the number of modules you would need to study and the total cost of the course.

Alternatively, if you are a health and social care practitioner you may wish to offset the 20 credits by progressing to the online BSc (Hons) Integrative Health and Social Care (Top-Up) degree.
