Claire is a technician at the CASS London Metropolitan University, working at the Textiles and Fashion department. Claire Whelan is a weaver that works under the name āWhelansWeavingā. She currently has her studio at Cockpit Arts.
Emma started out studying textiles at Goldsmiths, going on to produce screen-printed fabrics for use in upholstery and soft furnishings. Since studying upholstery under the AMUSF scheme at the Cass, Emma works on commissions from her studio in Peckham. As the technician, Emma is responsible for the day to day running of the upholstery workshops here at The Cass, any questions about tools and materials, just ask!
Kate is the short course co-ordinator and tutor on furniture-making professional courses at The Cass. A cabinet-maker, furniture-maker and teacher with 30 years of experience following fine art training, theatre carpentry and set-building, Kate loves wood and beautiful objects with wheels, restoring and recycling interesting materials and using her rather calloused hands to create.
Nick Pyall builds guitars using hand tools. He specializes in instruments inspired by Viennese guitars of the early and mid-nineteenth century, including those with extra bass strings, and the mid-twentieth-century guitars of the North American 'golden era' of acoustic guitar making. Nick is also a player and teacher of the guitar. In recent years his passion for the instrument has led to him studying its development and societal history. His previous teaching posts include being a senior lecturer in guitar making and the course leader for the Musical Instruments BSc at The Cass.
Shaun's background is in cabinet making, carpentry and joinery, and the conservation and restoration of furniture and works of art. Shaun trained for six years full-time, five of those at The London College of Furniture (now The Cass). Shaun has been working as Senior Furniture Conservator for 'The Royal Collection Trust' for over 27 years. His role covers all aspects of decorative furniture and wooden artefacts for The Royal Residences including Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral, Sandringham, Kensington Palace and Osborne House.
Dr Tony Murray is the Director of the Irish Writers in London Summer School and Curator of the Archive of the Irish in Britain. Tony graduated in Irish Studies in 1992 and, after running an Irish community bookshop and literary festival for a number of years, joined the Irish Studies Centre at London Metropolitan University in 1995, eventually becoming its Director from 2012-17. Tony has taught Irish Studies and English Literature for over twenty years, and has run the annual Irish Writers in London Summer School since its inception in 1996.
