During this course, you'll be shown the stripping down process and how to revive and repair the chair frame where needed. The class will go through the six weaving stages and you'll be shown how to peg the completed seat and apply a beaded trim if appropriate for the seat. Finally, the cane seat will be given a protective dye or wax.

This course will allow you to gain experience in the art of chair caning. It is suitable for those wanting to work commercially, either as part of an upholstery or restoration business or for a hobby, as well as those with a chair they want to repair themselves.

The course is suitable for upholstery students, furniture design students and craft enthusiasts, with beginner to intermediate levels of experience.

Course programme

Course structure:

  • stripping away the old cane and conducting repairs to the frame
  • start caning stages one and two
  • caning stages three, four and five
  • caning stages five and six
  • completed seat finishing

By the end of the course, you will have the ability to:

  • use a range of tools and equipment safely and correctly
  • prepare chairs for re-seating
  • select, prepare and handle materials to the best advantage
  • work the six-way standard pattern, placing settings, weavings and crossings appropriately and interweaving all stages correctly
  • apply the six-way standard pattern to trapezium/bow-fronted chairs
  • work beaded and pegged finishes, securing all loose ends and trimming neatly
  • select and apply colours to finished caning
  • apply loom cane to the appropriate frame
