The course is a practical introduction to CBT. It will provide an introduction to, and training in, some basictechniques and ideas used in CBT. The course is aimed at counsellors and therapists. Whilst the focus of thiscourse is practical rather than theoretical, there will also be an opportunity to evaluate CBT in terms of how useful orotherwise it is for different modality trained counsellors and therapists. This course is exempt from our standardrefund policy.

About this course

• Explain the use of CBT concepts such as cognitive techniques, behavioural techniques, guided discovery and formulation• Use at least 3 of these techniques on yourself• Assess in to what extent and with which clients you can use CBT with clients.

You should obtain a copy of the course reader:Westbrook, D. Kennerley, H & Kirk, J. (2011) An introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Skills and Applications (Sage).

Teaching will be a combination of lectures, small-group discussion, role plays, videos and whole group discussion. The course will be structured in a way congruent with CBT, including requiring students to do homework using the techniques between sessions, e.g doing a thought record. The tutor strongly recommends setting aside approximately 2 hours per week to carry out required homework tasks in order to get the most out of the course.
