This course introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. It uses the OSI and TCP layered models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network, data link, and physical layers. The principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum. Suitable for: Target Audience. This course provides a first step for those who wish to understand the fundamentals of networking and need to implement and manage Cisco routers and switches. It is also aimed at delegates who take all four modules and need to gain the knowledge and skills required to achieve Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) certification in a Cisco Academy environment. These courses may be taken over a period of not less than 6 months.

Network Fundamentals

This course introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. It uses the OSI and TCP layered models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network, data link, and physical layers. The principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum.

Labs use a “model Internet” to allow delegates to analyse real data without affecting production networks. Packet Tracer (PT) activities help delegates analyse protocol and network operation and build small networks in a simulated environment.

At the end of the course, delegates build simple LAN topologies by applying basic principles of cabling; performing basic configurations of network devices, including routers and switches; and implementing IP addressing schemes.

Skills

Upon completion of the Network Fundamentals course, you will be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Describe the importance and operation of data networks and the Internet in supporting communications
  • Recognise the devices and services that are used to support communications across an Internetwork
  • Use layered network protocol models to explain communication in data networks
  • Describe the importance of addressing and naming schemes at various layers of data networks
  • Describe the protocols and services provided by the Application layer in the OSI and TCP/IP models
  • Analyse the operations and features of the protocols and services at the Transport, Network and Data Link layers
  • Describe the fundamental concepts of routing
  • Design, calculate, and apply subnet masks and addresses to fulfill given requirements
  • Explain the role of Physical layer protocols and services in supporting communications across data networks
  • Explain fundamental Ethernet concepts such as media, services, and operation
  • Employ basic cabling and network designs to connect devices in accordance with stated objectives
  • Build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches
  • Use Cisco Command Line Interface commands to perform basic router and switch configuration and verification
  • Analyse the operations and features of common Application layer protocols such as HTTP, DNS, DHCP, SMTP, Telnet, and FTP.
  • Utilise common network utilities to verify small network operations and analyse data traffic.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Skills which may be helpful for this course are:

  • A+ Certification
  • Microsoft Office Skills
  • Introductory programming, internet/web or multimedia skills
  • Introductory electronics

During the introduction day you will be shown how to access the on-line course material. Studying this material is essential to the course. Your knowledge of the material will be tested during the classroom part of the course.

Contact with the Tutor is available during this self-study part of the course.

Delegates must have access to the Internet to view the on-line material or purchase the book: Network Fundamentals, CCNA Exploration Companion Guide. This is available from Pearson-VUE at a discount for delegates on this course .

Duration

An introduction day, followed by 4 other days, suitably arranged, to allow for up to 40 hours of self study.

Completion of the course will require the successful completion of a Computer-based exam and a practical skills-based assessment. This is not the same as the CCNA Certification exam, but will help prepare for it.

The CCNA Certification exam can be taken after the final course “Accessing the WAN, allowing some time for reflection and revision.
