To prepare you for your initial stages in a teaching career, we’ll give you the opportunity to develop your skills in planning and preparation, and support you as develop, deliver and evaluate a microteaching session. In the process, you’ll get the chance to develop your knowledge and understanding of a professional teacher’s role in the higher and professional education sectors – and the boundaries and legislation that apply to this role. This professional development course uses the University of Bolton as a context for exploring policies and procedures. We offer you an intensive programme of tuition where you attend the University for five full days. You’ll then have two weeks to digest the course content and prepare your coursework for assessment.
This is a stand-alone award, and is also the first module of the Initial Teacher Education (ITE 14+) scheme, so you can use the credit towards this scheme if you wish to go further with your learning and qualification. Likewise, if you’re a member of University staff who’s been offered formal teaching opportunities, you may be able to progress to the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education, with the written permission of the relevant Head of School.

About this course
You must hold a professional, subject specialist qualification related to the area you wish to teach. If you wish to teach a vocational subject area, you’ll also need to provide evidence that you have relevant work experience.
You'll be required to attend an interview as part of the application process.
This course involves working unsupervised with children and/or vulnerable young people and adults and you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies.
This is a stand-alone module that focuses on key practical and theoretical issues involved in planning and preparing to teach.
We’ll help you to understand how your personal knowledge applies to classroom practice, and support the approaches you take towards planning, preparing, assessing, evaluating and reviewing learning.
You can develop your skills in evaluating educational literature and research, and applying insights to your practice.
We’ll support you to develop inclusive approaches to teaching and learning that address issues of disability, age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, class and sexual orientation.
