Skills for Life practitioners' Awards provision at Walsall College is offered at Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. Classes take place over one session a week for thirty weeks and are accredited through City & Guilds.
Level 4 courses are currently not available owing to the on-going process of re-writing the awards.
On Level 2 and 3 programmes, assessment is via examination and assignment. In addition, all participants are required to undertake a teaching placement in the subject that they intend to support.

These qualifications are intended to develop a basic knowledge and understanding of language and literacy frameworks including personal and social factors that influence language and literacy learning and development as well as an advanced level of personal English usage. It is also intended to develop skills in supporting learning at a variety of levels with adult literacy learners.
The qualification is aimed at two major groups of staff in post-16 education
· Learning Support Assistants
· Non-Specialist Teachers (embedded adult literacy support)
Learners are expected to demonstrate a basic understanding and awareness of the knowledge and concepts covered. They should be able to use key terminology, e.g. to be able to use the term phonology accurately, and be able to describe the key elements of a concept or theory in terms of its relevance to working with adult Literacy/ESOL learners.
Certificate in Adult Literacy Subject Support learners will undertake five units of study and complete a placement in a post-16 educational establishment.
Certificate in ESOL Subject Support Learners will undertake six units of study and complete a placement in a post-16 educational establishment.

Progression
Employment within the Skills for Life area or further study within Skills for Life or within the wider college, employment, or voluntary work in supporting adult learners.
