About this course

You need 200 hours teaching practice; suitable qualifications in your subject specialism; a subject specific Mentor; numeracy and communication at Level 2 or equivalent; a current Criminal Records Bureau check; and two references - one should be from your employer. Those thinking of doing the Level 6 Professional Graduate Certificate must have a first degree.

The Programme
This course is for new teachers working in a full teaching role in adult or further education. This involves having responsibility for developing materials and curriculum across a full programme with a variety of learners. It is a two year programme and you attend one session each week. You will need 100 hours of teaching practice in both years (200 hours in total).The aim of the programme is to develop your teaching skills and enable you to gain Qualified Teacher Learning Skills (QTLS) status.
The Programme Content
The first year consists of three modules:
Processes of Teaching and Learning
Enabling Learning and Assessment
Theories and Principles for Planning and Enabling Learning
The second year consists of a further three modules:
Continuing Personal and Professional Development
Curriculum Development for Inclusive Learning
Wider Professional Practice
In addition, each module will be assessed through a 3000 word written assignment or equivalent, based on your reflections on how principles of learning, teaching and assessment apply in practice.
Entry Requirements
Mode of Study
The PGCE/Certificate in Education incorporating the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector is a part time teacher training course for those who work in the post compulsory sector. It is offered at Level 4/5 or Level 6 which is called the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. The Diploma course runs for four hours per week for six terms.
Timetabled Days
The course will be run on Wednesday afternoons 1.20pm till 5.20pm or Tuesday evenings 5.00pm till 9.00pm.
The Diploma course runs for four hours per week for six terms. In addition, there will be a minimum of four hours a week private study, assignment work and tutorial. Teaching practice is in addition to this.
The Certificate course runs for four hours per week for two terms. In addition, there will be a minimum of four hours a week private study, assignment work and tutorial. Teaching practice is in addition to this.
(If you have concerns about the time commitment you might wish to consider the City & Guilds Certificate which leads to the same qualification but with a lighter touch assessment and takes place over 36 weeks.)
Costs
Course fees are usually covered by the Local Authority grant. There will be a fee for photocopying.
Progression Careers
Upon successful completion, students may progress on to the Foundation Degree in Education and Training. From this you can progress to a BA (Hons) in Education and Training through the University of Plymouth.
