The course contains both theoretical classroom presentation of topics and on site supervised practical instruction. The on site practical exercises take place adjacent to a simulated overhead lines which enable the trainee to develop sufficient technical knowledge and practical skill to implement safe systems of work adjacent overhead lines. Certificate of Competence in Utility Arboriculture - U2 Tree Work Operations Participants (Candidate Profile)

This course is for persons that are experienced in ground and/or aerial arboricultural operations and have already successfully completed NPTC UA Unit1.

Participants must hold NPTC CS Units 30 & 31 for ground use plus 38, 39, & 40 for aerial operations.

The training is physical in nature. Participants must have a good level of general fitness and stamina. Medical conditions must be reported to the course tutor prior to commencement.

Course Content

The course contains both theoretical classroom presentation of topics and on site supervised practical instruction. The on site practical exercises take place adjacent to a simulated overhead lines which enable the trainee to develop sufficient technical knowledge and practical skill to implement safe systems of work adjacent overhead lines.

Instructor expertise

We have found from experience in the delivery of training that two trainers, each representing the arboricultural and electrical disciplines provide trainees with sufficient effective instruction to enable them to successfully complete assessments for Unit 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3

The electrical instructors are drawn from within the industry and have experience in working in close proximity of overhead lines in a variety of situations; most are both trainers and assessors.

The arboricultural instructors are normally working utility arborists or training providers with utility arboriculture experience.







The expected learning outcomes are that the participant:

q Is aware of the legislation and safety guidelines pertaining to practical line clearance operations including "live and dead" working.

q Is able to identify hazards and implement control measures.

q Recognizes the differences between Low and High Voltage systems.

q Is aware of and recognizes the live, vicinity and proximity zones for the various system voltages.

q Is able to place trees in the appropriate category/proximity zone according to the work required.

q Is able to identify dangerous overhang.

q Understands the legal constraints in relation to working on trees.

q Is aware of the environmental considerations of working on trees

q Understands the 1-2-3 sequence of cuts for branch removal.

q Is able to identify the appropriate tools for a variety of pruning operations.

q Recognises, understands and uses approved techniques for safe and efficient branch/tree removal.

q Is able to identify a minimum of 10 common broadleaved tree species using common names and a minimum of 4 coniferous tree species

q Understands general growth and timber characteristics for a range of common species.

q Is able to identify hazards defects and symptoms of ill-health in trees

q Is able to identify site constraints in relation to the disposal of arisings.
