Certificate of Competence in Utility Arboriculture - UA1 Basic Electrical Knowledge

Participants (Candidate Profile)

This course is for persons that are required to work within the proximity zone of overhead lines up to and including 400kV.

A current first aid certificate which includes treatment for shock is strongly recommended and may be a requirement of some electricity companies.

Course Content

A wholly electrical unit essential for all operators at all levels. Covering the identification of overhead lines and associated equipment above and below ground, identifying the Hazard and Risks associated with the arboricultural maintenance of that equipment.

There is one element:
1.1 Demonstrate basic electrical knowledge for working within the proximity zone of overhead lines.

Instructor expertise

The electrical instructors are drawn from within the industry and have experience in working in close proximity of overhead lines in a variety of situations; most are both trainers and assessors registered with the National Proficiency Tests Council.


This is the first foundation unit to a series of 4 other units. Once this is acheived candidates can progress onto UA2 (Tree Work Operations), UA3/4, UA5 (Risk Assessment & Site Survey)
