Course programme

This course will be of interest both to survivors of traumatic events and those who, in their work, come across victims of traumatic incidents.

The specially selected key text is written by a former sufferer of PTSD who has done his own research into the problem of PTSD and brings together in a comprehensive volume knowledge of the symptoms, complications and causes of PTSD and information about some available treatment approaches.

Case histories are given and there is information about taking legal action, a discussion on debriefing methods, and essential reference material including Internet sites. The textbook is easy to read but is not only aimed at those recovering from PTSD. Its unique compilation of information, personal stories and insights is invaluable to many professionals including the counsellor, psychotherapist, social worker, voluntary helper, member of the emergency services, law enforcement officer, lawyer, pastor or teacher and relatives of PTSD sufferers. A crucial chapter identifies bullying as a major cause of PTSD, thus extending the discourse on traumatic stress and its effects to include slow-acting or cumulative sources of stress as well as sudden incidents and disasters.

  • Study will be carried out by reading the textbook and submitting written assignments – these can be sent by e-mail. There is no minimum study time and the student may complete the course by submitting all coursework to satisfactory standard.
  • Suggestions for further reading concerning therapies suitable for PTSD will be given for those who wish to train in such therapies or expand their knowledge to help people choose appropriate treatments.
  • A free textbook is given to UK students - overseas students will need to buy the book from an on-line bookstore or other source.
