Course programme

The course is designed to meet National Occupational Standards for Working with Parents. It provides an opportunity to:

  • Specialise in working with parents of this age group
  • Meet core national occupational standards for working with parents
  • Gain credits in higher education.

The course covers:

  • Considers what young people need from parents
  • Explores the issues involved in parenting young people
  • Familiarises participants with research that underpins evidence based work with parents of young people
  • Enables practitioners to develop skills to work effectively with parents from a strengths-based approach
  • Encourages participants to reflect critically on their work with parents

Accreditation: The course is accredited by Middlesex University - Department of Work Based Learning and will award successful students 30 C.A.T. points.

The National Academy of Parenting Practitioners has validated that the Supporting the Parents of Adolescents course meets the following core National Occupational Standards. These include core NOS:

  • 301 Build and maintain relationships in work with parents
  • 302 Communicate effectively with parents
  • 306 Enable parents to reflect on the influences on parenting and the parent-child relationship
  • 307 Work with parents to meet their children’s needs
  • 308 Enable parents to develop ways of handling relationships
  • and behaviour that contribute to every day life with children
  • 310 Reflect on and update own knowledge and practice
  • 312 Deliver services that value and respect parents
  • 316 Provide environments that are sensitive to the culture,
  • religion, gender or disability of parents

Course work: Participants will be expected to hand in work for assessment during the course and should allow an equivalent of six days in home study for this.
