Course programme

Used correctly chainsaws and their allied cutting equipment are very versatile tools. But they are potentially very dangerous. Serious accidents can and do occur.

Training is a legal requirement. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require all employers to provide adequate training to ensure that chainsaws are operated only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use. Anyone working on trees in expected to hold a recognised certificate of competence. If you are self-employed the Regs. still apply. The only exception is agricultural holdings where work is carried out as part of an agricultural operation and the operator used a saw before 5 Dec '98. Lantra and HSE never the less, recommend training to all operators. Should there be an accident the HSE would be likely to take a more lenient approach towards an employer who has trained his staff.

LANTRA two day course covering Maintenance and Cross Cutting. The Instructor will carry out an assessment during the course, and provided a sufficient standard is reached, a LANTRA certificate will be issued. (Lantra is a nationally recognised awarding body)

This course can be followed by a two to three day Felling Course. This will enable trainees to fell trees safely, up to an 8inch diameter. This will also be assessed and certificated by LANTRA.

Course Content

• Maintaining the chainsaw including starting procedures and pre-work checks
