The course lecturer, with 45+ years of shipping and trading experience, is a fourth-generation shipping professional. He's a Baltic Exchange member since 1976, with roles as shipbroker, ship owner, gasoil futures broker, charterer, and commodities trader. He offers global maritime and commodities commercial claims consultancy and customized corporate training. Since 1994, he's been arbitrating maritime disputes. He's a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a Visiting Professor at the IMO's World Maritime and Shanghai Maritime Universities

Course programme

Day 1 (9 am to 1:30 pm GMT+1)

Module 1: Contractual basics

  • Who is responsible for what in Time Charter/Voyage Charter/Trip Charter;
  • Vessel description and adherence to contractual obligation;
  • Fixture recap;
  • Voyage planning and routing and orders;
  • Notices to parties.

Module 2: Vessel Operations and Voyage Optimisation

  • Voyage Estimating: methods, results and lessons learnt;
  • Bunker consumption and ROB;
  • Tank cleaning and inerting procedures;
  • Choosing appropriate port agents/agency accounts/common problems.

Day 2 (9 am to 1:30 pm GMT+1)

Module 3: Documentation Management

  • Recap and Charter Party;
  • Freight or hire calculations and invoices;
  • Load/Discharge documents: port activities and proforma v actual D/A;
  • Unpaid freight ~ lien on cargo;
  • Off-hire calculations and claims;
  • Illegitimate Last Voyage under time charters;
  • Claims and time bars.

Module 4: Practical enforcements and legal problems with bills of lading

  • Bill of Lading or Seawaybill, Liabilities/Incorporated clauses;
  • Endorsed v Switched BsL;
  • Issue and corrections;
  • Forgeries;
  • E-BsL.

Day 3 (9 am to 1:30 pm GMT+1)

Module 5: Laytime

  • Notice of Readiness and Statement of Facts;
  • Exceptions, Exclusions and Interruptions;
  • Worked calculation examples;
  • Demurrage negotiations: owners, charterers and traders.

Module 6: Dispute Resolution

  • Mediation;
  • Arbitration;
  • Litigation;
  • Enforcement.
