Chemistry (4CHO)

This Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry course consists of 5 sections exploring different aspects of Chemistry.

This course consists of five units:

Unit 1: Principles of Chemistry

Unit 2: Chemistry of the Elements

Unit 3: Organic Chemistry

Unit 4: Physical Chemistry

Unit 5: Chemistry in Industry

Unit 1: Principles of Chemistry

• Atoms
• Atomic structure
• Relative formula masses
• Chemical formulae and chemical equations
• Ionic compounds
• Covalent Substances
• Metallic crystals
• Electrolysis

You will also consider the practical aspects of study in these topic areas.

Unit 2: Chemistry of the Elements

• The Periodic Table
• Group 1 elements - lithium, sodium and potassium
• Group 7 elements - chlorine, bromine and iodine
• Oxygen and oxides
• Hydrogen and water
• Reactivity series
• Tests for ions and gases

You will also consider the practical aspects of study in these topic areas.

Unit 3: Organic Chemistry

• Introduction to organic chemistry
• Alkanes
• Alkenes
• Ethanol

You will also consider the practical aspects of study in these topic areas.

Unit 4: Physical Chemistry

• Acids, alkalis and salts
• Energetics
• Rates of reaction
• Equilibria

You will also consider the practical aspects of study in these topic areas.

Unit 5: Chemistry in Industry

• Extraction and uses of metals
• Crude oil
• Synthetic polymers
• The industrial manufacture of chemicals

By the end of the AS Level you will have begun to successfully investigate key areas of Chemistry and be prepared for further progression in this and related fields.

By the end of the Edexcel International GCSE you will have also investigated several key topic areas in much greater detail and practised some of the research skills that are so necessary to success not only in this field but in other interrelated fields.

The format of the Examinations

PLEASE NOTE: All exams will be held during the May - June exam period.

Paper 1 is externally assessed through an examination paper lasting 2 hours.

Paper 2 is externally assessed through an examination paper lasting 1 hour.
