Course Content AS Units • Chemistry for Life: Elements of Life and Developing Fuels • Chemistry of Natural Resources: Elements from the Sea, The Atmosphere, Polymer Revolution • Chemistry in Practice. A2 Units • Chemistry of Materials: What’s in a Medicine? The Materials Revolution, The Thread of Life, The Steel Story • Chemistry by Design: Agriculture and Industry, Colour by Design, The Oceans, Medicines by Design • Chemistry Individual Investigation – you will carry out a single investigation taken from any aspect of chemistry. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by a combination of written assignments and internal assessment with exams for each unit. You will be assessed in five skills areas: competence, measurement, analysis and evaluation, observation and interpretation. Progression Chemistry itself (and the related subject, Biochemistry) offers a variety of careers. A degree course in Chemistry is offered by most British universities. More specialised careers such as those in forensic science also require a background in chemistry. It is also an essential requirement for the study of medicine. Students who completed this course have gained places on courses such as BSc (Hons) Chemistry, BSc (Hons) Maths and Statistics and BSc (Hons) Geology at the University of Surrey, Birmingham University and Royal Holloway London. Fees • If you are aged 16-18 as of 31st August on the year of enrolment - no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31st August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary Funds: There are financial support arrangements for 16-18 year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19’s.
