Course programme

Year 1

GCSE chemistry provides an understanding of the key concepts of chemistry. There are two units covering the fundamentals of chemistry: atomic structure, periodic table, quantitative chemistry and applications (cosmetics, cooking, industrial). These two units are assessed by two written examinations in June. The third unit consists of practical topics and a report on a science in the news story and is assessed internally via controlled assessment and externally moderated.
You will be expected to study for at least 6 hours outside your timetabled classes.

Additional information

You will be assessed throughout the course to enable your tutor to set and review learning targets and will undertake a controlled assessment task which counts towards your final grade. Summative assessment is by two separate, externally marked examinations in June. As this is such a detailed and intensive course, you will be expected to study outside your timetabled classes for at least 6 hours per week; we will encourage you to use Moodle and blend-space to support your studies.
