This is our flagship course, which enables you to study chemistry in depth and to gain a masters level qualification. It also includes the scope to study a foreign language in year 1, and to carry out two research projects (one of which may be undertaken in a European University).

About this course
The course aims to enable understudies to: The student should be able to demonstrate a preliminary understanding of the principles of quantum mechanics in the context of atoms, molecules, and elementary understanding of modern molecular orbital theory.
The student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the difference between covalent and ionic bonding, bonding theory, hybridization and the shapes of simple inorganic and organic covalent molecules.
The student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of trends in chemical and physical properties in relation to the position of the element within the Periodic Table
The student should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of nomenclature, functional groups, the structure and chemistry of simple organic molecules and simple synthetic principles.
MChem is a careers orientated degree. Destinations for past students include pharmaceutical companies, postgraduate study in chemistry (PhD), high technology industry (eg optoelectronics, chemical sensors, computational modelling), government organisations, teaching and computer software development.
380 320 points (excluding General Studies) including A in Chemistry at A2 level.
3 subjects at A2 level excluding Key Skills.
