The course will introduce the emergence of the idea of childhood and how Bible illustrations, directly targeted at children contributed to the construction of childhood. Children’s Bibles will be looked at in their social and cultural setting, an the selection of illustrations will be analysed. Finally, examples of how the Bible is portrayed in children’s literature will be analysed and discussed.

About this course
• Analyse and reflect on the reasons for the emergence of Bibles specifically for children.
• Identify the various styles and ideologies at work in selecting and ignoring biblical passages.
• Appreciate the literary impact of Bible stories on children’s literature.
• Understand the factors at work in the transformation of these stories in various types of children’s Bibles.
Please bring a copy of the Bible.
The course will introduce ideas about the emergence of the concept of childhood and how it was reinforced through Bibles specifically made for children. Classes will be organised around group discussion and illustrated lectures.
