You will examine different approaches and styles of illustration, and through experimentation with a variety of media, will learn how to tackle the development of ideas and character. You will explore the relationship between illustration and text, familiarise yourself with research strategies, and begin to develop a personal visual language. Discussions will offer the perspective of current publishing demands and global markets.

About this course

• understand the relationship between illustration and text
• explore and develop character, narrative, and research strategies
• generate ideas in response to a given brief
• use a range of relevant media
• understand something of the varying demands of publishers in relation to age range, gender and markets.

The course fee covers basic materials and equipment. It would be very useful for you to bring the following: an A3 sketchbook, a notebook, B and 2B pencils, an eraser and a sharpener or scalpel.

The course will combine demonstration, group discussion and critique, and individual tuition. You will be encouraged to contribute ideas and present your work. Homework will include research and image development.

Course programme

Over the course, you will have the opportunity to explore a variety of media, including digital, collage, pen and ink, paint, crayon, pencil, wax and chalk. You will learn basic publishing terminology, and how to research and develop ideas in response to a given brief. The workshops will cover character development, design and layout, relationship of illustration to text, and an understanding of target age ranges.

Additional information

You will have the opportunity to discuss your own possible directions following the course. These might include taking other illustration courses, drawing classes, portfolio-building courses, art foundation, BA courses, or approaching publishers and agents for relevant illustration work (depending on previous experience).
