This course is a follow-on from the Children’s Book Illustration course.
It’s aimed at those who already have some familiarity with illustration or making children’s books.
The course will enable you to explore the process of writing and illustrating a children’s book in depth. You’ll be invited to work on pre-existing projects, or develop a new project with the tutors support.
It’s a very practical course involving intensive drawing, writing and design homework.

Course programme
On this course you will:
- have a combination of group and one-to-one tutorials
- explore character development including techniques for drawing animals, children, facial expressions and movement
- study narrative techniques including suspense, sequence, narrative arcs, pace, and language
- learn about visual compositional principles such as colour, type, layout, page and book design
- create professional storyboards, character sheets, roughs and dummy books
- get advice on working as a professional illustrator.
