Introduction:
A BTEC National Diploma is a practical, work-related course valued by employers and higher education institutions. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the early years industry, you will also develop the skills needed to start, or progress a career in this industry. This course is equivalent to three A Levels and has been awarded UCAS tariff points to allow for entry to higher education. During this course you will develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in your future working life.

Study Mode & Location:
This two year full-time course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
The course is made up of 1080 hours, which are divided into units, some of which are specialist units to enable you to study areas relevant to your future career or studies.

You will study:

A wide range of subjects related directly to working with children from birth through to the age of 16 years. Subjects studied include:
  • Promote Children`s Development
  • Coaching and Mentoring
  • Children`s ICT Skills
  • Literacy Skills and Becoming an Independent Learner


Key Skills will also be studied of Improving own Learning and Performance, Information Technology and Application of Numbers. You will complete a minimum of 800 hours of compulsory placement experience within a range of 4 different childcare and education settings. You will apply for a CRB clearance upon enrolment in order to begin placement in September.

A mandatory work-based experience is part of this course which consists of 800 hours within a range of four child care and education settings such as:

  • Voluntary pre-school
  • Statutory pre-school
  • Private nursery provision
  • Nursery school/class
  • Primary school
  • Hospital
  • Special needs provision covering a range of special educational needs and behaviours
  • Voluntary provision
  • Working in the home with a childminder


This work placement will provide you with the perfect opportunity to link your theoretical knowledge to real life child care and education situations. You will also have the opportunity to enhance your time at College through taking part in various enrichment activities such as courses on Drugs Awareness and Disability Awareness, and visits to GoApe in the Lake District, Alton Towers and visits to Universities in the North West of England to gather information about progression opportunities. You will also complete the three core Key Skills of Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology at an appropriate level.

Assessment:
Assessment is continual throughout the course. Each unit is assessed individually through completion of assignments, which could be projects, essays, presentations, role plays and work experience. All units are awarded a grade of Pass (P), Merit (M) or Distinction (D) which will build towards your final grade.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course provides a specialist work related qualification to prepare you for immediate employment in a wide range of settings with children. Previous successful learners have gone on to employment as Nursery Nurses and Teaching Assistants. Alternatively the Diploma provides direct entry routes into Higher Education as up to 440 UCAS points can be achieved. Previous successful learners have gone on to study Foundation Degrees in Early Years, Foundation Degrees specialising in children with Special Educational Needs, Degrees in Early Childhood Studies and Teaching Degrees (Bed and BA Hons).

You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Part-Time+ Course Benefits

Requirement
Students aged 16 to 19 must have 35 GCSE points. Students aged 19 or over should have at least one of the following: BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in an early years subject. Intermediate GNVQ in an early years subject. At least four GCSEs at grades A* to C. ... or equivalent qualifications. If you intend to enter teacher training after the BTEC National Diploma in Early Years, you should be aware you will also need Grade C or above in GCSEs English, Mathematics and Science. All students will need to show an enthusiasm for working with children of all ages/all abilities, a positive attitude to learning and the commitment to achieve the very best possible. You will be interviewed to assess your eligibility for the course and will also need to comply with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) vetting procedures for those working with children and young people (as required by Law). This will be needed for you to start your placement hours on the course.
