If you’d like to work with children, young people and the services that support them, this course draws on subject areas including education, sociology, psychology, social policy and social work to give you a solid grounding for your career. You’ll examine the services, systems, policies and work practices that relate to children and young people in schools, with families and in care settings. You’ll carry out observational visits and work shadowing activities alongside the academic side of your degree, integrating theory, policy and practice so that you are well prepared for a rewarding career.

Course programme

Course at a Glance Year 1 (Level 4)

We offer a range of optional modules that explore topics such as disability, gender, drugs and social pedagogy. The first year (level 4) consists of a broad-based introduction to a number of important topic areas. You will be required to complete the following 6 compulsory modules:

  • Social Construction of Childhood
  • Communication and Social Media Skills in Social Care
  • Introduction to Children’s Services & Systems
  • Development across the Lifespan
  • Learning for Work in Children’s Services
  • Transitions in Children and Young People’s Lives

If you complete all these modules successfully you will be able to progress to Year 2 or, if you do not wish to continue you will be eligible for the award of a Certificate in Higher Education (Children, Schools & Families).

Year 2 (Level 5)

In Year 2 you will be required to complete 5 compulsory modules:

  • Researching with Children and Young People
  • Children’s Services & Systems 2
  • Safeguarding Children & Young People
  • Diversity and Inclusive Practice with Children and Young People
  • Learning for Work in Children’s Services - Consolidation & Continuing Development
  • Students are also required to select one optional module.

If you complete all these modules successfully you will be able to progress to Year 3 or, if you do not wish to continue you will be eligible for the award of a Diploma in Higher Education (Children, Schools & Families).

Year 3 (Level 6)

In Year 3 you will be required to complete 4 prescribed modules:

  • A Dissertation
  • Children’s Services and Systems 3 (Multi professional Working in Children’s Services)
  • International Perspectives on Children’s Lives
  • Learning From Work in Children’s Services
  • Students are also required to select two optional modules.
  • Successful completion of all 18 modules will give you the award BA (Hons) Children Schools and Families.

Part-time students will follow the same programme in terms of required and optional modules, but do so over an extended period of time, typically between 4 and 6 years.
