Description

The Skillsbase course will help students develop the skills they need to organise themselves and relate to other people so they can learn to live independently, and possibly get a job. Group sizes are small, eight in a class, to ensure that all students are well supported. As well as a qualified teacher, there will also be a classroom assistant. In addition, for learners with specific learning difficulties, additional learning support is available which is assessed. Additional learning support will usually be provided in small groups or on an individual basis.

What is this course about? The Skillsbase course will help students develop the skills they need to organise themselves and relate to other people so they can learn to live independently, and possibly get a job. Group sizes are small, eight in a class, to ensure that all students are well supported. As well as a qualified teacher, there will also be a classroom assistant. In addition, for learners with specific learning difficulties, additional learning support is available which is assessed. Additional learning support will usually be provided in small groups or on an individual basis.

Who is this course for? Skillsbase courses are for young people with barriers to their learning leaving school at 16+ who have either a statement of educational need, receiving additional learning support in school or who are being supported by outside agencies such as family services, educational psychologist and speech and language therapists. They are for vulnerable young people with learning difficulties and disabilities who learn best in supported small group settings.
, Our courses start at Entry Level 1 and designed to move people on into work so we expect learners to have some basic literacy and numeracy skills.

What do I need to get on the course? No specific qualifications required. All learners will have a literacy and numeracy assessment when they come for interview.

What will I study? The Skillsbase team teaches the Edexcel Life Skills in the first year and the Edexcel Skills for Working Life in the second year. In both years you can also study City and Guilds Literacy and Numeracy certificated courses.
The course runs for two years and you have the option to progress further onto an entry level 3 or foundation level courses run at the college. Our courses are designed to enable learners to `keep on learning¿ until they are ready to find employment.
In the first year the Skills for Life certificated course focuses on developing your independence, in terms of cooking, cleaning, shopping, money management, being safe at home and outside, travel including planning the way you are going to travel.

A personal tutor to support you with your learning who you will see on a weekly basis

2 weeks work experience in the second year relevant to your course

What qualification will I get? In the first year you will study towards the EdExcel Skills for Life award. In the second year, you will work towards the EdExcel Skills for Working Life award. In both years, you can also study City and Guilds Literacy and Numeracy certificated courses.

What can I do after the course? You can progress to higher level courses at Entry Level 3. You may be able to go straight into work. You may also be able to access other training courses from other providers.
