About this course

- Feel confident about singing as part of a choir
- Know more about choral repertoire in a number of genres
- Perform simple 2- and 3- part harmonies
- Have a greater understanding of how the voice works.

Music sheets are provided but please bring a folder to keep them organised. You will also need a pencil and perhaps a Dictaphone on which to record your vocal line so that you can learn more quickly in your spare time.

Each lesson will begin with a vocal warm up before new music is studies and rehearsed. Sessions will comprise of a methodical building up of the separate voice-parts, and then focus on ironing out problems and difficult passages as the parts are brought together. The teacher will then work on interpretation by drawing attention to more prominent lines within the overall texture and dynamic contrasts within the piece.
You may be asked to rehearse outside the classroom from week to week and/or listen to recordings or backing tracks.

Course programme

- The musical repertoire on each course module will cross several genres so there is something for everyone. From
movements from famous classical choral works to folk, pop and musical theatre
- A vocal warm up is used at the beginning of each session
- You will also learn some basic technique and breathing exercises designed to help you get the most out of your
voice
- We read from some musical scores but there is plenty of time to learn notes in rehearsals so you are not expected
to have advanced music-reading skills
- Repertoire may include occasional sacred items from various traditions
- Repertoire will include part singing.

Additional information

You may repeat this course for a long as you wish as the repertoire changes each module. However, we recommend a minimum of three modules’ study to experience a useful amount of repertoire. If you are interested in exploring your vocal potential further you may like to consider ‘singing for beginners’ to learn more about your voice and then ‘Basic technique for singing’ to take your first steps in singing solo. General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00. See the course guide for term dates and further details
