Course programme
This course consists of 4 units – you need 3 for a full certificate and can choose 2 of the units, the 3rd unit is compulsory. The units can be done in any order. After you have completed 3 units, you may have the opportunity to work through the extra unit.
The course is 40 weeks long which is approximately 13 weeks per unit.
Throughout the course you should ask your tutor if you need help and don’t understand a particular task or instruction. When you are confident your tutor will set you up with an exam.
Word-processing
- Sketch & create draft documents - memo, faxes, business letters
- Format a document - orientation, paper size, margins
- Insert graphics, page breaks, automatic page numbers
- Format text - indent, bullets & numbering
- Search & replace techniques
- Print document in different sizes - A4, A5
Spreadsheets
- Plan spreadsheet layouts and formatting
- Create suitable formulas and functions - SUM, MAX, MIN, AVERAGE
- Format cells - currency, number, date
- Insert & delete rows/columns
- Print selected areas/whole spreadsheet
- Print selected formulae
Database
- Create directories/folders - make back up copies
- Identify common database terms - table, field, record
- Identify data types - character, text, number, date, currency
- Design a database structure - field names and data types
- Add/delete records
- Sort records alphabetically/numeric
- Create queries
IT Principles (compulsory)
- Identify hardware - mouse, keyboard, monitor, scanner, floppy disk
- Identify consumables - printer paper, cartridges, toner
- Desktop window operations - shortcuts, toolbars, switch between programs
- Create simple documents & use email to communicate
- Create/delete/rename directories & folders
- Use search facilities to locate files
- Copy/move/cut files between directories
- Access the network area to locate files
Desktop Publishing
- Use suitable application software - Microsoft Publisher
- Alter margins, page orientation, set columns, page sizes A4 & A5
- Insert text - emphasise, line spacing, justification, move/copy, delete/insert
- Insert graphics, move, copy, delete
- Graphic attributes - size shape border position
- Draw lines/circles/boxes - line thickness, colour, style
- Flip/rotate graphics
Presentation Graphics
- Open/load presentations - new, existing templates
- Import text from other applications
- Insert clipart/text files - duplicate/move images, group objects
- Set margins, tabs & indents
- Create slide shows
- Duplicate, delete, reorder slides
- Print single slides, whole presentation
