Introduction:
A BTEC National Certificate is a practical, work-related course valued by employers and higher education institutions. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the civil engineering industry, you will also develop the skills needed to start, or progress a career in this industry. This course is equivalent to two A Levels and is suitable for both junior technicians working in the Construction Industry and those wishing to develop academic skills and qualifications. All classes will take place in our specialist, purpose built construction facility.

Study Mode & Location:
This two year part-time course will last for 7.5 hours per week. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
This course is made up of 12 units. You will study five mandatory core units, five mandatory specialist units and two specialist units of your own choice. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more depth. Subjects you will study include:

  • civil engineering technology

  • applied Maths
  • ICT and computer-aided design
  • economics and finance
  • health and safety
  • planning and organisation.

Assessment:
Assessment is continuous and through written assignments and exams. All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
A BTEC National Certificate prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding for progression to a more advanced course such as an HNC, HND or Degree in Civil Engineering/related topics. Employment opportunities exist in a range of Civil Engineering disciplines and the skills you acquire during this course should enable you to progress to a technical or professional position in industry. Employment opportunities exist in construction companies, private practices, local authority or government departments, in a job covering one or more of the following:

  • Civil Engineering.
  • Structural Engineering.
  • Highway Engineering.
  • Railway Engineering.
  • Public Health Engineering.

You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
