This course consists of 8 units. You need 3 for a full certificate and can choose 2 of the units, the 3rd unit is compulsory. They can be done in any order but we recommend that you do File Management and e-Document Production first. When you have completed 3 units you have achieved the qualification.
The course is 29 weeks long, which is 9 weeks per unit. If you are having problems understanding anything, please remember there is extra support available.
Unit 1 - File Management and e-Document Production
- Create/rename files and folders
- Copy/move/delete and rename files & folders
- Create basic documents, enter text, numbers and symbols in Microsoft Word
- Format & emphasis text
- Amend a document (move, copy, delete, line spacing etc.)
- Insert tables and apply borders
- Insert headers & footers including automatic fields
- Set up tabs and indents
- Use find and replace
- Complete a word count on a document
Unit 2 - Creating Spreadsheets and Graphs
- Insert text & numerical data into a spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel
- Insert/delete rows
- Create basic formulae such as addition, subtraction, multiplication & division
- Replicate formulae within columns/rows
- Create pie charts, bar/column charts and line charts
- Format numerical data
- Apply borders and shading
- Save and print data and formulae within a spreadsheet
Unit 3 - Database Manipulation
- Open and use an existing database using Microsoft Access
- Create/delete records from a database table
- Find and replace data
- Save and print data
- Create queries & reports for specific data
Unit 4 - e-Publication Creation
- Create a publication page layout using Microsoft Publisher
- Setup margins, text frames (boxes), column, font types and sizes
- Import, position and manipulate text & images within columns (crop, flip, move)
- Apply borders and lines
- Align, resize, amend text
Unit 5 - Create an e-Presentation
- Create presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint
- Setup a master slide, using different font styles, size and emphasis
- Insert different text on individual slides - promoting/demoting specific text
- Insert & apply shading to different objects/graphics
- Print the presentation as slides, handouts and as an outline
Unit 6 - e-Image Creation
- Create simple artwork using Microsoft Word
- Create graphic shapes (squares, circles, rectangles) and apply shading/fill shapes
- Insert text and images (resize, crop, move, amend, rotate)
- Flip, copy, trim, resize and delete items
- Create new artwork using Adobe Photoshop
- Set artwork resolution
- Save and print artwork in both colour and black and white.
Unit 7 - Web Page Creation
- Create webpage's using Microsoft FrontPage
- Insert, amend & emphasis text
- Insert & align images
- Format background colours
- Create links within pages, external webpage's and an e-mail link
- Print webpage's and the HTML source code
Unit 8 - On-line Communication
- Access a web-based email account
- Download, virus scan and save attachments
- Attach a file to an email message
- Store an email address to the address book
- Create/reply/forward/delete messages
- Search the Internet using hyperlinks/search engines
- Save data from a webpage
- Bookmark webpage's
The course plan is as follows:

2. Work through practice assignments (check your work using check sheets)
3. Sit final assessment – when YOU feel confident enough
