The course concentrates on the literary and archaeological evidence for aspects of Greek and Roman civilisation. At AS Level you will study two units from a range of topics which are likely to be: Archaeology and the Classical World (in which you will study the principles and methods of archaeology and the archaeological evidence from major Mycenaean sites). Greek Historians (in which you will study literary extracts from the works of Herodotus, Thucydides and Plutarch). If you continue to A Level in year two you will study a further two units which are likely to be: Roman Britain (where you will study the literary and archaeological evidence for the conquest and Romanisation of Britain). Comic Drama in the Ancient World (where you will analyse a selection of plays by Aristophanes, Menander and Plautus).

About this course
A Grade C in English Language GCSE or equivalent would be considered to be a minimum expectation as there is a considerable amount of textual analysis in the course. Students should have a deep interest in all aspects of the Classical world including its archaeology and literature.

Duration:
One year for the AS followed by a further year to complete A Level.
Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
No previous knowledge of Latin or Greek is required, but for those interested in AS and A Level Classics it may be possible to study one Classical Civilisation unit as part of your Classics A Level. Students are not required to be involved in archaeological excavations but those with a particular interest in this aspect of the course are encouraged to join local societies and to participate in excavations organised through the Council for British Archaeology or training digs arranged through academic institutions.
How will I be assessed?
At the end of each year of study assessment is by external examination.
What can I do afterwards?
Students have gone on to study History, Classics, Classical Civilisation and Archaeology or a range of other subjects related to their other disciplines.
Are there any additional costs involved?
Students are encouraged to acquire the literary texts and text books which form the prescribed material for the course.
