Course content
If you enjoy reading, are excited by words and ideas, and have a real interest in humanity, this course will suit you. Literature deals with the whole range of feelings, emotions and attitudes that all of us experience, and writers from different periods and cultures can enhance our understanding of ourselves, of others and of the world.
AS: Year 1
Unit 1: Through studying two novels and two poetry texts you will discover the central position of narrative in the ways in which literacy texts work.
Unit 2: You will study two drama texts, both tragedies, one a Shakespeare play.
A2: Year 2
Unit 3: You will deepen and develop your ideas on the significance of genre which have been established during the AS course by studying texts grouped into one of the broad categories: Elements of the Gothic or Elements of the Pastoral.
Unit 4: You will study at least three texts and a booklet of materials which will focus your attention on different ways of approaching Literacy Criticism.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Unit 1: Aspects of Narrative - An open book written paper with two questions lasting 2 hours
Unit 2: Dramatic Genres - A portfolio of two pieces of written coursework (one may be re-creative) each 1200-1500 words
Unit 3: Texts and Genres - A closed book written paper with two questions lasting 2 hours
Unit 4: Further and Independent Reading - A portfolio of two pieces of written coursework: comparative study of an aspect of two texts (1500-2000 words); an application of an aspect of pre-released critical anthology to a literacy text (1200-1500 words)
What Could I Do Next?
English Literature is a highly regarded advanced qualification which is universally acceptable for higher education and is favourably looked upon by employers.
Are There Any Special Expenses?
The Department provides all general and coursework texts but students are expected to purchase their own set texts. Theatre trips are arranged and usually cost between 10.00 - 30.00.
