Classical Studies
Introduction
The staff and students of the Department of Classics and Ancient History are all engaged in the study of the Greco-Roman world. The department is one of the largest in the country in terms of teaching staff, allowing us to cover many different aspects of antiquity. Ranked among the best in Britain, the department enjoys an international reputation for the high quality of its research, particularly into Myth and the Classical Tradition. This means you can be assured of high-quality, exciting, teaching.
Teaching and Learning
Option topics may be taught in the form of large lectures. However, core topics and language classes are taught in smaller groups, where personal contact is ensured. All written work is discussed in individual tutorials. Third-year students are taught in seminar groups of no more than 15-20, ensuring an emphasis on group participation.
Assessment
You must complete all written work and pass the first-year examinations in order to enter the second year. The final degree result is partly determined by examinations at the end of the second and third years and partly by second- and third-year coursework.
