Overview
The Classics (Greek & Latin) BA is an interdisciplinary course that will allow you to explore aspects of the classical world through the development of your skills in Ancient Greek and Latin, and by reading ancient texts in their original form. No prior knowledge of either Ancient Greek or Latin is necessary as we offer innovative pathways to support your rapid acquisition of practical skills in these languages. You will develop and hone your language skills, reaching an advanced level of reading proficiency in Greek and Latin literature by year 3.

Year 1

Year 1

King's reviews its optional modules on a regular basis, in order to continue to offer innovative and exciting programmes. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that any particular optional modules will run in a given year and the options listed below are subject to change.

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take up modules totalling 120 credits. Required Modules

If you have not studied ancient languages previously, you must take the following 30-credit modules:

  • Working with Greek and Latin Literary Texts: An Introduction
  • Beginning Greek language
  • Beginning Latin language
  • Introduction to the Study of Greek and Latin

You must also study an intensive 15-credit three-week Summer School module in either Intermediate Latin or Intermediate Greek in between the first and second years.

If you have studied Greek and or Latin at A-level, you will be required to study the following modules:

  • Working with Greek and Latin Literary Texts: An Introduction
  • Greek Language 1, 2 or 3 depending on language experience
  • Latin Language 1, 2 or 3, depending on language experience
Optional Modules

Additionally, you will take 30 credits from a range of optional modules, (each worth 30 or 15 credits), which may typically include:

  • Art & Archaeology of Greece & Rome
  • Introduction to Ancient History (c. 1200 BC-AD 600)
  • Introduction to Ancient Philosophy

You may study modules from another Department in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities with the approval of the programme convenor.


Year 2

Year 2 You will take a range of core and optional modules in year two.

You also have the opportunity to study abroad for either the second semester of the second year or for the whole of the second year. Partner institutions currently include:

  • University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (Up to five places exclusively available for Classics students)

You will select modules totalling 60 credits from a wide range of options (each worth 30 or 15 credits), which may typically include:

  • Greek 3A
  • Latin 3A
  • Introductory Greek Texts: Prose
  • Introductory Greek Texts: Verse
  • Introductory Latin Texts: Prose
  • Introductory Latin Texts: Verse
  • Greek Texts: Prose
  • Greek Texts: Drama
  • Greek Texts: Poetry
  • Latin Texts: Prose
  • Latin Texts: Drama
  • Latin Texts: Verse

Optional Modules

You will choose modules (each worth 30 or 15 credits) totalling 60 credits which may typically include:

  • Homer
  • Virgil’s Aeneid
  • Latin Love Elegy
  • Pompeii: History and Society
  • Ancient Sexuality I
  • Who Needs Myth?

For those who have never studies an ancient language, the intensive 15-credit three-week Summer School module will count towards these 60 credits.


Year 3

Year 3 Required Modules

You will study modules totalling 60 credits in Latin and Greek language (each worth 30 or 15 credits), including modules with a close reading of texts such as:

  • Introductory Latin Texts: Prose
  • Introductory Latin Texts: Verse
  • Greek Texts: Prose
  • Greek Texts: Drama
  • Greek Texts: Poetry

Optional Modules

You will also choose modules (each worth 30 or 15 credits) totalling 60 credits which may typically include:

  • Dissertation
  • Living forever: fame and glory from Homeric heroes to Roman emperors (and beyond)
  • Augustus: Power & Propaganda
  • Streetwise: narrating the city in classical literature
  • Neronian Literature and Culture
  • Plato's myths: the soul, desire and the beyond
  • Romanticism and Revolution: Byron, the Shelleys and Greece
  • Descent to the Underworld: transformations of a myth
