Course programme
The aim of the module is for you to develop safe standards of practice in a clinical setting and critically evaluate current practice.
You will study the role of DXA/bone densitometry in the diagnosis of osteoporosis and the strategies for preventing and managing fractures within your clinical setting. This will include a review of the performance characteristics of bone densitometers and the measurement techniques employed, comparison of systems, system performance dosage, accuracy and precision of densitometers. Diagnostic assessment and report outcomes will also be covered.
During the module you will consider the strategies for the prevention and management of fractures within the clinical unit. This will include use of various pharmacological and non pharmacological approaches and lifestyle recommendation. Other factors considered will be lifestyle and onset of secondary disease, the physical, psychological and social impact on the patient of sustaining a fragility fracture and multi-agency input into the care of the fragility fracture patient.
